Solo 401k Treasury Bonds FAQ – Can I buy I-bonds directly from my Solo 401k brokerage accounts?
I just opened my account at TD Ameritrade for my solo 401(k). Can I invest in Treasury Bonds (I-Bonds) directly from the brokerage account for my Solo 401k?
Response:
Thank you for the good question!
First, one must open an account at Treasury Direct in order to invest in I-Bonds. In order to invest Solo 401k funds in I-bonds, one must open an account under the name and EIN of the Solo 401k.
With regards to funding the account at Treasury Direct, one must confirm with Treasury Direct what payment methods they accept to fund the account. If the Treasury Direct account for the Solo 401k may be funded via wire or check, then one may wire funds or write a check from the TD Ameritrade brokerage account for the Solo 401k to fund the Treasury Direct account for the Solo 401k.
If Treasury Direct requires that the account be funded via ACH, then one must open a bank account for the solo 401k since the brokerage firms that open accounts for a Solo 401k (including TD Ameritrade, Fidelity, Schwab, etc.) don’t allow for funds to be transferred out of the brokerage account for the solo 401k via ACH.
