Self-directed IRA FAQ: How quickly can you set up an IRA LLC?
Question:
“I need to make a real estate investment using my Roth IRA funds by the end of the month, so how quickly can we set up an IRA LLC?” – Bob
Response:
That’s a great question, Bob.
The biggest x-factor is the time it takes for the money to transfer from your existing retirement account (i.e. Roth IRA) over to a new self-directed Roth IRA (SDIRA) at a specialty trust company like Forge Trust that allows alternative investments like LLCs.
While we prepare the IRA LLC paperwork very quickly, typically filing the articles of organization to create the LLC within 1 day, it is the fund transfer to the new custodian that can take some time. Forge and other SDIRA custodians will open accounts rapidly, but the actual fund transfer depends on the policies of your current IRA custodian or former employer plan (e.g., 401k) administrator.
Based on our experience, it can take 2-3 weeks for retirement funds to transfer over to a new SDIRA provider to be invested into an IRA LLC.
Here are some of the factors:
- Transfer Method: Funds are often transferred via check which takes longer to clear before being re-invested, whereas a direct custodian-to-custodian transfer of assets can potentially be faster.
- Paperwork Processing: There may be paperwork and administrative requirements on the sending custodian side that add some lag time.
- Account Reviews: Some custodians may review the account first or need extra documentation before releasing funds.
So while we prepare the IRA LLC rapidly on our end, meeting a short timeframe can be challenging due to external custodian delays. The best approach is to initiate the transfer process as early as possible. Then the LLC formation and funding can run on a parallel track.
