Making the Solo 401k Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

Last Updated February 8, 2026

If you are required to make a required minimum distribution by December 31, 2026, use the following procedure and form to document the RMD.

First Determine the RMD Amount

A calculation must be performed to determine your solo 401k RMD amount.

RMD Calculator

To use our RMD calculator, CLICK HERE.

To run the calculation, you will need to enter the market value of your solo 401k as of 12/31 of the prior year and you date of birth.

Second Distribute the Funds from your Solo 401k

Once you determine the RMD figure, it is time to distribute the funds from your solo 401k account.

You will work with the bank or brokerage firm that is holding the solo 401k funds to distribute the proceeds by check or by wire. The distribution amount must be deposited to your personal savings or personal checking account NOT to an IRA back to the solo 401k.

Third Issue Form 1099-R to Report the Distribution to the IRS

My Solo 401k Financial LLC will issue the Form 1099-R to report the year 2026 RMD as long as the form request is received by 12/31/2026. Make sure to complete the following on-line RMD form once you have distributed the funds so that we timely collect the necessary information to issue the Form 1099-R. https://www.mysolo401k.net/solo-401k/required-minimum-distribution-rmd-solo-401k-distribution-form/
