Self-Directed 401k Question: If I want to invest in crypto – can I do that through my Schwab brokerage account for my Solo 401k? Or do I need an account elsewhere?
One of the top reasons that self-employed persons open Solo 401k plans with us is the fact that our plan allows for alternative investments, including real estate, crypto, notes, precious metals, etc.
In order to invest Solo 401k funds in cryptocurrency, an account will need to be opened under the name and EIN of the Solo 401k.
Please note that different sub-accounts will be needed if there are different types of funds (e.g. pre-tax, Roth and/or voluntary after-tax Solo 401k funds) or funds for different persons (e.g. if a husband and wife both work in the same business and therefore each participate in the Solo 401k there will be different sub-accounts for each).
