BACKGROUND/QUESTION: I’ve been wondering about the contribution deadline for the employee portion of the solo 401K. I’d be contributing to a Roth Solo 401K. I know that it’s tax filing time (plus extensions). But I’ve already filed my taxes. Does that mean I have until October 15th to make a 2012 contribution to my Roth 401K or because I’m not filing extensions does it mean that I have to have it in by April 15th? I haven’t seen this question addressed anywhere.
ANSWER: Because you filed your taxes by or before the April 15 deadline, you cannot make your contribution to the solo 401k, whether employee or employer, on or before October 15. That’s the whole purpose of the tax filing deadline and extension, with the ladder allowing you to make the annual contribution by the tax extension deadline if Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, was timely filed.
Thanks,
